I don’t always wear lipstick, especially red ones. It takes forever to apply it precisely in the first place, and it comes off way too soon. And the smears? They make me look like I’ve blood lust for my salads and paus. Which is why Shiseido’s latest range of reds, Rouge Rouge, took me by surprise.
The Shell
The lines of the sleek black casing is soft and curved, making it a real pleasure to hold. The classy cover comes embedded with magnets; I’m always on the move so I think this is clever, as it makes sure it doesn’t slide off into the abyss of any purses or make-up bags.
The Texture
The mould is one of the more precise ones I’ve ever put to my lips, making it easy to define my bow-shaped lips. Although the formula is oil-based, ‘velvety’ comes to mind when I swipe any of it on, and the finish is mostly matte with a nice subtle sheen (turning the bright hue of RD312 Poppy, for example, into ruby red!). What’s really lovely is how it feels so moisturising, it practically doubles as a lip balm, too.
The Colours
Rouge Rouge comes in 16 vibrant shades, and I’ve tried the following five:
All in all, these hues are bright, but not overwhelmingly so. Payoff-wise, it’s pretty intense. One swipe is just nice (unless you’d like your pucker to really pop). No dabbing required.
The Staying Power
So, last Friday, I decided to put Hushed Tones to the full test. I had a small bowl of fruit (orange and guava), a glass of protein shake, and a plate of veggie and chicken, before I felt a real need to touch up. This is pretty impressive especially when I consider how it lasted almost five-six hours from the first application, about one-two hours more than its humble four-hour claim.
We wish we looked as good as her. Well, we almost did, with a mesmerising scarlet pout.

But what better way to test a lipstick than at a buffet table? That very same day, MyDateSmith (mydatesmith.com) invited #teamCLEO to an intimate singles night at Vin’s Velvet Lounge, and let’s just say that attending the event on behalf of the team put my nerves to the test – even more so when a hottie asked me to sit right across him. (Hushed Tones is meant to be a very subtle peachy nude hue, but so much for blending into the background. #irony) My lips went dry so, quickly, I excused myself to the ladies to touch up, and felt a lot better.
And afterwards? Let’s just say that the men around me wouldn’t stop talking with me. My lip colour even outlasted the canapés, too (pasta included!). Before I left, Mr Hottie even asked for my number. Like the lipstick itself, it felt really flattering.
